Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade is Awesome!

Fourth graders experience an exciting year of study and learning experiences. Both critical and creative thinking are nurtured, personal responsibility and independence are emphasized, and teamwork and community are fostered.

In Language Arts, we explore “Growing up”, “Making a Difference”, “The Power of Words”, “Working Together”, and “Habitats”. We strengthen and extend our writing skills by writing five paragraph essays, including genres such as narratives, persuasive, compare and contrast, and opinion writing.

For Math, our study is in base ten numbers (place value, multiplication, and division), algebraic thinking, fractions, decimals, measurement and data, and geometry. Students work together in groups, as well as lead lessons, to help each other master these challenging academic concepts.

Units in Social Studies revolve around the geography and history of California, with a focus on the mission period. Students write reports and make posters and models of the missions as a culminating activity. We also celebrate the diversity of our state and community with study and presentations during Black History month and Woman’s History month.

Science is very hands-on. We incorporate experiments, scientific procedure, journal writing, and record keeping in each unit of study. When we study “Magnets and Electricity”, the students use magnets in a variety of ways to investigate their properties, make a lightbulb light up, and build an electromagnet. During the “Solid Earth” unit, students break apart mock rocks, conduct tests on various rocks and minerals, and research the materials that make up our planet Earth. In the “Environments” unit, students build, grow, care for, and study both terrestrial and aquatic environments (each table group having their own to be responsible for), hatch brine shrimp from eggs, watch the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a butterfly, dissect owl pellets, and conduct experiments and investigations on food webs, range of tolerance, viability, and much, much, more!

Our Health studies include social and emotional health (practicing good character, making responsible decisions, expressing emotions, and fostering healthy relationships), Growth (the human body systems and development), and Nutrition.

Of course, fourth graders sing, dance, and make creative works of art. Fourth graders also play games and exercise to strengthen and challenge our growing bodies!

Fourth grade. It’s fun! It’s challenging! It’s enriching! It’s empowering!
