History

In 1996 the school community voted to become a Los Angeles Unified School District "LEARN" School. In the process of working on the first LEARN school reform plan, a group of parents, teachers, students, and administrators met at Cal State University to put our school's mission and vision into words. After several exhausting hours of writing verbiage that was educationally sound but lacking personality, the students asked to work on their own. In about 45 minutes they returned to the room with statements that expressed the uniqueness of our community. These same student-created Mission and Vision statements still guide our school culture today. At VAS, the curriculum, instruction, and assessments are based on the state standards and this need to be reflected in the new vision statement. In order to formulate our Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLR's), we surveyed staff, parents, and students, asking them what students should know and be able to do upon graduation. We also consulted research, observed best practices at comprehensive high school, and participated in WASC Accreditation Teams. As a result of these efforts, we formulated our ESLR's which are put in the acrostic of D.R.E.A.M.
